Edmonton Zone PCN Group Classes

The eight Primary Care Networks in the Edmonton Zone are working together to offer a variety of virtual group patient education classes to people who live in the Edmonton Zone.


Below is a list of the patient education group classes offered by the other seven PCNs in the Edmonton Zone.

Attendance at these group classes does not require a referral. The classes are open to anyone in the Edmonton area.

Mental Health

Relationships in Motion

Learn skills and strategies to improve their relationships – family, personal, or work. Topics covered in the class include ways to better to understand yourself and the other person, increasing healthy communication, managing conflict and how to cope with intense emotions.

Anxiety to Calm

Anxiety to Calm is a simple, positive and empowering class. It is for those who want to have an opportunity for a healthy learning process to manage their anxiety. Anxiety to Calm moves people to action. The classes teaches low tech and low cost skills that should be accessible to everyone.

Obesity Clinic Nutrition Classes

Daily activity tips and weight-loss strategies offered at every session. Patients are encouraged to attend all six sessions and can start during any week as the classes repeat every six sessions. Attend one class or attend all.

Why Nutrition Matters

If you have questions about what to eat or how much to eat, this class could be for you! Learn how your body’s digestive system works, how to space out your meals and include a balance of nutrients in your meals to help you feel full and energized until your next mealtime. This class also covers many popular nutrition and food myths. You’ll leave the class with a better understanding of how to fuel your body to meet your nutrient needs.

Introduction to Mindful Eating Active Living

If you’ve struggled with being on diets in the past, have frequent food cravings or often feel uncomfortable in your body, this class could be for you. The introductory class offers you a different non-diet approach so that you may better understand why you eat the way you do.
You’ll be given tools to help increase a feeling of control over food and satisfaction with eating. The class is designed to give you a different perspective on weight loss with an overall goal of helping you feel at peace with your body.

Beginner Exercise Classes (with an Exercise Specialist)

Join every weekday at 12:15 p.m. for a 30-minute beginner workout you can do from your living room. Exercise specialists will lead you through a fitness session that’s good for your heart AND muscles. Suitable for all levels of fitness.

Our PCN (Sherwood Park – Strathcona County PCN) regularly offers Diabetes 101 (The Basics) and Diabetes 201 (Managing Food and Lifestyles with Diabetes). You may also be interested in our CHANGE Program.

Healthy Eating for Managing Blood Sugars

Learn how to balance different types of food to help manage blood sugars. A Registered Dietitian will answer many questions you have around diabetes including meal timing and portion sizes.

Quit Core

This program is to help anyone who is looking for tools to quit smoking or using tobacco products. You will learn tips and tricks for managing cravings and withdrawals and get tips on dealing with stress to help stay on track. Learn more about developing a quit smoking plan and discuss nicotine replacement options.

Pregnancy

Early Prenatal

Provides education for expecting parents who are in the first 20 weeks of their pregnancy. Topics include prenatal care, management of common symptoms, nutrition and physical activity. Attending with partners or a support person are encouraged.

Prenatal

Join health professionals who specialize in pregnancy, birth and newborn care to discuss topics such as physical activity, self-care and mental health, comfort measures during labour and birth, infant care, breastfeeding and parenting. For expecting parents over 20 weeks. Attending with partners or a support person are encouraged.

B.E.S.T Breastfeeding Cafe

A weekly community support group for breastfeeding mothers. Meet with lactation trained nurses to ask questions about latch, positioning, and newborn behaviour while gaining support from other breastfeeding mothers. A new topic is explored each week such as coping and mental health, nutrition for breastfeeding mothers, physical activity in the postpartum period, and community resources.

Managing Pain

Managing Pain Through Mindfulness

Incorporate mindfulness and meditative practices into your life as a way to manage pain experiences. Explore ways to increase your mobility and flexibility with very gentle forms of movement and learn ways to reduce the intensity of pain experiences.

Moving on with Persistent Pain

Learn ways to manage pain including planning your activities to improve stamina and energy while preventing flare up. You will also explore the relationship between anxiety and stress and pain levels, along with learning to set goals to change your lifestyle and decrease pain.
